Welcome to Stilbaai
Remnants of ancient fish traps, shell middens and Middle Stone Age artifacts can be seen at Stilbaai.
The picturesque coastal village is affectionately known as the Bay of Sleeping Beauty, due to its close proximity to the landmark Sleeping Beauty Mountain.
The village is characterised by long stretches of sandy white beaches; including an international Blue Flag beach; mild weather and a river that is navigable for 15km; there is also a small fishing harbour and landing strip for small aircraft.
It is difficult to imagine that just a short distance away, over the mountain pass, is the semi-arid Klein Karoo and renowned Cango Caves!
Jongensfontein is a scenically splendid coastal village about 9km away, along the coast and Melkhoutfontein is about 7km inland of Stilbaai and is home to old, traditional fisher families.
If it’s the elusive Big One you’re looking for, look no further than ‘The Point’, a hotspot among the surfing fraternity.
More than 250 bird species have been identified in this beautiful part of Hessequa. The coastal belt and land within a radius of 20km around Stilbaai provide suitable shelter, food and nesting for a wide variety of resident and migrant bird species.
For a unique experience, feed South Africa’s only tame eels, that are said to have been living in the spring at Palinggat Homestead - where the Tourism Bureau is housed - for 125 years.
There are ancient fish traps, constructed up to 2000 years ago, by ancient people called Strandlopers. There are also middens – piles of shells created by the accumulation of mainly mollusc shells and Middle Age Stone artefacts and replicas of artefacts found in the world-famous Blombos Cave are on display at the Tourism Bureau.
Stilbaai is part of the Whale Coast that stretches from the Gourits River Mouth to Witsand and whale watching has become a huge draw card for tourists, between mid-July and mid-November annually, when the mighty Southern Right Whales migrate to the warm waters to calve and frolic in the bay.
Stilbaai activities and attractions include historical exhibitions, nature gardens, a craft centre, botanical reserves, nature reserves, archaeological tours, boat cruises, surfing, swimming in the tidal pools at Jongensfontein, and the Stilbaai Beach Touch Rugby is an institution, which sees visitors and fun-seekers from far and wide converge on the village on the 26th of December annually for this event.
